Discuss about anything related to the Twelve Kingdoms, also known as 十二国記, Juuni Kokki or Jūni Kokuki. Talk about the novels, the anime, the writer Fuyumi Ono or illustrator Akihiro Yamada, but beware for spoilers!
I'm rather curious about this. The Japanese BluRay shows it still having a 3/4 aspect ratio (rather than the normally 16/9 widescreen ratio that most BluRays are in), but the 5.1 channel audio definitely interests me; the original DVDs were only in two channel Dolby Surround.
The Japanese BluRay also lists "Features HD master footage", which implies that this isn't an upscale, but I would have thought this show would have been rendered in SD format; there's no cells available to rescan. It's possible that they rendered the series in 1080p HD originally, but I've not heard of any shows doing that in the "early digital" age.
This is definitely interesting. And it's another copy of the series for me to buy...
Well i'm not a huge fan of the anime honestly, so this may sound a little biased. But, I don't see the huge advantage of 5.1 for the series. Doesn't seem like there would be enough going on for it to make it THAT much more exciting. I guess some of the music would be nice to hear blasted.
But in my opinion, animation doesn't benefit as much from bluray as a standard live action movie.
Just an update, Twelve Kingdoms Part 2 (episodes 15-33) Bluray is to be out Oct 11, 2011 and Part 3 (episodes 34-45) will be out Dec 13, at least in the U.S.
Robert's Anime Corner Store has them here, I'm sure other retail places will have them available too.
If anybody has Part 1 on Bluray, feel free to tell it how it looks, especially compared to the DVD if you have it. I suspect it's an upscale, but I see no information about that anywhere, yet.
