Hello Kjkirimi. Welcome to the forum. There haven't been any books out recently and the anime series has been well chewed over, so it isn't busy here. I hope you enjoy it, though and if you can help start some discussions, we'd be grateful.

They sure save a lot of money on condoms and birth control!

The social effects of seperating sex from reproduction would be quite profound. It probably explains the comparative sexual squality in the Twelve Kingdoms.

I believe the world of Twelve Kingdoms wasn't created based on any physical or natural principles of the real world. It's much easier to see it as what it is without asking why, coz our minds are limited by what we've learned.
However, my confusion is--- if intercourse won't lead to any babies, which include unexpected ones, then how come the brothels are needed? Without the threat of following responsibility, everyone would be slutty as long as the coitus brings pleasure.......

It has to be based on real world principles. Gravity exists and most characters have to eat. Just because some characters and creatures can ignore gravity and the need for food, doesn't mean that they don't exist. Fire burns and swords cut. The society is hased on the Chinese model and the lad distribution on the well field system.

You can just accept everything in the series without asking what, or why or what the consequences are. Personally, I prefer to be human instead of a vegetable. Why would you be here if you had no questions or thoughts about the series?

Because intimacy counts? Because it's a bad idea to debase the coinage? (i.e. something is only valued if it's rare and difficult to get.)

I figure the JK humans are human, save for the modifications we're told about (like sterility). Humans with good birth control and little fear of STDs act somewhat slutty in the aggregate, but I think even before HIV the "free love" movement was finding that many of them couldn't walk the talk: jealousy and a fair amount of pickiness in partners are probably built into most of us. So yeah, two JK citizens who like each other may go to bed more readily, but what if he doesn't like you? What if no woman likes you? What if no one you know wants sex without commitment but you just want to have some sex? What if you have special desires?

Brothels meet the needs of "I want to get laid right now", "I can't get laid otherwise", "no one will let me piss on him", "I want a 5'3" redhead with purple eyes who's about 100 pounds", "I want to beat her up really badly", "I want to have sex without her clinging to me", and such.
