All's shaping up rather well with one episode left in the arc! Only one complaint: what on earth happened to the animation quality?? X.x;;

The art/animation has been on and off the entire series; there are at least three distinct styles that I remember. The best style doesn't show up very often, and mostly in not-very-animated-scenes. There were two styles in ep38, and a few scenes where they didn't bother drawing fingers! The people had flesh-colored mitts!

Anyway, I'm dying to see 39. *_*

I hope all the art/animation for 39 will be consistently good, but closure is the most important thing.

When is 40 supposed to air, anyway...

Yeah, the animation quality this episode was definitely down. . . Yoko's mouth looked like it was too far to one side of her face in one side-shot.

yeah... the whole part where youko reveals her true self to them just makes me cringe..

and the dialog is so great too... it could have been the best moment in the whole of Juuni Kokki (aside from Taiki and the Toutetsu)... but the art really sucks... so the whole sequence falls flat on it's face. :\

a shame really.

after that, the ride out of the fort and then the art is normal again. :\

This reminds of an episode in RahXephon. It was like they let the rookies fill in for a few scenes, not a good decision to make for the last few episodes of the arc.

Such a great episode, and such terrible art. I will forgive them if they're trying to double the budget for something truly awesome in episode 39.

Aaaargh, the art bugs me so much. If episode 37 was done by their B-team animators -- with faces that were a little off-model and a slightly different style for the bodies -- then 38 must've been done by their D-team. I swear they just used two frames for most of the talking in this episode, and they couldn't even make their mouths hang open naturally.

Oh, well... at least they didn't make like Gundam Seed and completely forget to fill in one of the frames.

That is one incredibly strong bear.

I certainly hope Sonshou gets a high-ranking position after this. She's an excellent liar, and she knows exactly what's going on in palace life. Youko could use a new advisor like her (to replace the ones filled with arrows earlier ). I know a lot of people want all three of the girls to hang out in the palace and be cool together, but I'm not sure Suzu really fits the bill. She's still just a little immature for holding an important position. She'd probably be better as an outside contact to keep Youko informed about the people.

I really hope that all the cool youma and hanjyuu action from this episode comes back double in the next episode, properly drawn.

From the preview only, it looks like at least the major scenes should be nicely ("normally") drawn. Er, I hope. Even if they just used only three stills of good art for the girls talking at the beginning and animated only their mouths, I'd be happy. ^^;

I agree about Shoukei being good advisor material, but at the same time I think she needs to get some closure from stealing from the Empress of Kyou (now that would be an interesting extension of the story). I thought Suzu would be a good common-person contact too; perhaps even a liaison for kaikyaku washing up at Kei (sounds like a fitting post).

Hm, I'd completely forgotten about that. Funny how all the characters I really hate at the beginning of the arc end up being the ones I like at the end.

I'm not sure what she could do to atone for all that. I'm pretty certain that Kyou-ou would rather be rid of her, unless she's really so egotistical that she likes having princesses to kick around. I'm sure Youko would be happy to settle any debts for her, but that wouldn't solve anything, and I don't think Shoukou would accept such a favor even if it was offered. Perhaps Shoukou will just go back to Kyou and work off her debt for a long, long time? Does she even have any of her ill-gotten goods left?

They should send Shoukou to the Suibikun!

I am actually worries about how they are going to wrap it up. There are so many story lose ends. Shoukou needs to thank the Lord of the Kei province and the Rike leader and needs to repay the Empress of Kyuu.

Also How is Youko going to replace at least 3 lords/ministers that have fallen. My brother and i where discussing this and A solution we found was to.

A) Give Gaho's job to Koukan so he can work on fixing it up koukan is then replaced by the rebel leader that was Enho's Student.

B) Enho is promoted to councel leader.

C) Shoukou replaces Shouken. I would put her higher but she needs some seasoning.

D) Sezu becomes the imperial spy master and reports to the empress what is going on.

this unfortunatly still leaves people with no proper placement.

ok ok people, ShouKEI = former princess, ShouKOU = bastard. ^^

Anyway - I was thinking Shoukei could work it off; that would be the right thing to do, and Youko covering it wouldn't really solve it either; and remember, the Ryuu judge took the jewels as a bribe. But I suppose it's not that critical. I did like Kyou-Ou, though; even if she was a minibitch, she was still a good empress who was very responsible and lenient when she needed to be. I wouldn't mind seeing more of her, really...

Bah, she's not psycho. Hasn't she ruled for 90 years already? That means she's doing something right... and c'mon, it's not like people would feel all that SORRY for Shoukei while she was working for Kyou-Ou, huh. Shoukei was pretty darn unlikeable at the time. Though Kyou-Ou could be a bit nicer to her kirin.... hee~

Guh. Everyone seems to love calling me on it every time I mess a name up, once every four episodes or so. It's not my fault half the characters' names start with "Shu" or "Sho," and half the terms and countries start with "Kei" or "Kai." -_-

I think she'll eventually need to work on that attitude. She may be shrewd, but she thinks far too highly of herself. She's just an empress, after all, not a... uh... um... she's...
