12 Kingdoms RPG!

This anime would be great as a rpg or even an online rpg! I would definetly pay for it. I think the author and animators have done a great job of creating the alternate world. All of the details make the story that much richer.

An RPG, I agree. I said pretty much the same thing in another forum not too long ago - yet I was thinking of making it a pen & paper role playing game.
There is enough background material in the eps for a good dungeonmaster/gamemaster to run a decent campaign in the Juuni Kokki setting - screw computer games, use your imagination and creativity and go for the real thing, :)

There are two games for Juuni Kokki already. One is a "Net RPG," whatever that means, and I'm not sure what the other's about.

One thing I hate about most RPGs around right now is the bigass amount of hitpoints one eventually has. The original point of hitpoints is totally lost on most games. They were originally meant not only to depict physical toughness, but also one's ability to take hits in such a way as to cause relatively little damage. Of course, even that was flawed as the benefit of the same healing effect/spell on two characters is different relative to their total hitpoints. This is probably why I'm most impessed by GURPS, which appears primarily aimed at role-playing anyways, rather than combat and leveling. I guess I'm just a realism junkie, though. . .

I totally agree with you there, Ostsol. I've been a role player for nearly a decade now, mainly played D&D - and the games usually start losing realism the higher you level up. Exorbitantlly high amounts of hitpoints practically ruin the game in my opinion; either the players are constantly confronted with über-foes, or the battles just turn into an endlessly dull die-rolling contest, which completely ruins the role playing experience.
In D&D I start losing interest in characters that go beyond 5th level.. I'd rather battle an orc, fearing that his next blow might render me unconscious, than running around challenging dragons just because I can.

Shadowrun has a very nice HP system - in fact, I've even considered trying to run a D&D campaign setting with the Shadowrun rules.
In Shadowrun, your hitpoints never change. The only difference between characters is their hardiness (a 250 pound football player will probably suffer less pain from a punch than a fragile ballerina) and their dexterity.
Weapons have a fixed number of damage points that they inflict, and they are sorted into different categories: light, medium, heavy and deadly damage (whereas "deadly" usually doesn't instantly kill your character). It then depends on the situation, your characters' dexterity (his/her ability to dodge the attack), his/her armor, and his/her hardiness to see how much damage he/she actually takes. Basically the only way to make yourself a harder target is by wearing heavier armor, which is harder to penetrate.
During an attack, the attacker and the defender roll a specific amount of dice (the amount of dice is altered by each character's abilities), and the number of successes are compared. If the defender has more successful results than the attacker, the amount of damage is either reduced (from "heavy" damage to "light" damage for example), or no damage is taken at all. If the attacker has more successful results, the defender takes full damage.

Erm.. hope I didn't bore you with that..

Anyway, the reason why I like that system so much is because the HPs always stay the same. Heck, characters in Shadowrun don't even level up, they just gradually improve their skills over time. The result is in depth role playing and realistic battles - you just KNOW that if everything goes wrong, your character could die.. thus you try everything possible to avoid unnecessary deadly situations.

Tentei: Dunno about that.. though it does sound intriguing, I know that I myself wouldn't have the spare time to work out a JK RPG. If someone wants to do it however, I'd be glad to help them out every now and then.

Ever thought of the possibility to create a RPG for Juuni Kokki right here in the forum? Or am I the only one who is aware of how forum role playing is done?

Anyway, it sure would be fun.

Twelve Kingdoms RPG

One problem with a JK RPG is that there isn't much room for a typical D&D "party of adventurers". It's all politics. I'd also want to avoid having one of the PCs being a ruler. It'd restrict their actions too much and be unfair on the other players. On the other hand, it's the rulers who are the movers and shakers of the world. The ability of normal people to shape the world is limited. However, there are some possibilities.

1) A group of mercenaries who protect merchants and travellers from youma and bandits. These are aparantly common enough to make good cover for a group of rebels.
2) Youko decides to set up a group of trusted agents to pose as normal citizens and investigate officials for corruption and tyranny from below, reporting to, say, Keiki or Rakushun. Can your PCs perform a sting operation on a judge reported to be taking bribes?
3) A group of wandering performers who keep getting into trouble and picking up odd members.
4) In a kingdom under a failing ruler, you are a group of minor officials. Can you protect the people in your area? If they do a good enough job, the campain could end with a PC being selected as the next ruler.

Possibility 5) All the PCs live in Tai. Enough said. Even between the time that Gyousou and Taiki disappeared and the time that Risai went to plead for the aid of Kei, that's plenty of room for adventure.

(You can get wallpapers from ダウンロード page of the above two sites. They are great.)
I found the wp, but I can't download them - it looks like there is no link to the big picture, only the thumbs linking to the page they are on in the first place. I am using Mozilla. Any suggestions? If anybody can download the papers, I'd appreciate a direct link to the papers.

I've got the second of the Playstation2 Juuni Kokki games, Kakukakutaru Oudou, Kouryoku no Uka (赫々たる王道 紅緑の羽化). I haven't gotten very far into it yet (very slow going as I'm still struggling with the language), but judging by the first part which I've played so far it looks like a really good game.

I'd like to get Guren no Shirube, Koujin no Michi (紅蓮の標 黄塵の路) as well. Actually, I would have liked to get it first since I generally prefer to play series games in order, but the newer one is what I found at a video and game store, so that's the one I picked up (along with a Saiyuki game which isn't nearly as good).

It would sure be nice if an English version of these were released for the North American market, but the anime itself doesn't seem to have gotten as much widespread popularity as I think it deserves. That doesn't bode well for the likelyhood of releasing the games here as well. We can always hope, though.

Oooh, looks fun. I'd like to help with setting up something like that. (I don't have a server to run it on, though.)

I think for the RPG aspect, something similar to Whitewolf system should work best, as the focus is on interaction rather than fighting.

System

Problem is - the White Wolf system frankly sucks. People prefer to concentrate on interaction rather than fighting simply because the combat system is such a mess. I'd prefer GURPS. It's got enough skills for interaction and administration.

Problem is, using GURPS will involve the purchase of at least a few books, unless someone is willing to write a document specifically for 12k.

I'm up for the role-playing forum idea. I've always thought about combat as secondary in role-playing, and the JK setting lends itself rather well to a wealth of interactions outside of simple combat.

(Sort of like those online web games where you get 3 moves every 24 hours, etc.) But it would take a lot of moderating for the GM. But whatever, if you are interested, tell me here.
i was wondering wh there are no RP's here...i mean the role playing for writers...i would like to have one here....:D it's like taking part in the world of twelve kingdomns our own way...sure...make one...:D pls...

I think It'd be cool if we could do a message board RPG. Someone else would have to start it up though cuz I don't understand how such things work exactly. The only kind of RPG I've played is within the video game world where there's already a set story.

As far as unactive members go, I'd say there are about ten members give or take, who post here fairly casually. We could probably manage an RPG i think...

well, i also don't know how RP message board is used...all i know is that it is a trining ground for writer since they'd be writing their own adventures and other will ba a part of it by also writing....because twelve kingdoms is a different world, it will be nice to have RP forum here...:D
