What's going on in Han?

Okay, first post here.
I've seen all the episodes, I've read all the translations avaliable...but one thing bothers me.
I see all kinds of fanart on Japanese websites of Han-ou and Hanrin, and it's usually quite amusing. (Unusual poses, mischievious looks)
They are supposed to be "kind of odd" according to Enki, but what does that mean? Does anyone know?
There must be either art of them or a detailed description of them in the novels, because there is much fanart and even quite a bit of cosplay, all of which resembles each other.
Cosplay Example:

Two Fanart Examples:

Well, I hope someone here knows what is going on.

Ohhhh i want to know.
I have heard two theories.
Theory 1. They are lovers and or husband and wife. The Emp Married his Kirin. Remember it was not that Yo-Ou fell in love with Keiki that killed her it was that she tried to wipe out all other females. So i assume that Tentai would not object if the emp and the kirin got it on. Still it would seem rather odd. (there are so many cracks i could make about that idea but as i would like to keep these forams PG i will refrain.)
Theory 2. They are Cross dressers. The Han Kirin is Male and the Han Emp is Female. If you look in the pictures the Han kirin is dressed like a female and the han Emp is dresses like a male. It has been speculated they are reversed.

Well, lovers was definately one I had thought of, although if I am correct, they are both female. (Enki even refers to the Empress as such) So that would be even more facinating if that was true. ^^
Crossdresser is possible, but if either is a cross dresser, it would be the Empress. I think Enki would refer to Hanrin as Hanki if she was the crossdresser. But I might be wrong.
Screenshot I made from Ep 21:

So yeah, that's all we see of em in the series.
I don't suppose anyone has read the novels from the source here? ^^; My Japanese reading skills ends at hiragana and katagana.
Another thing that's interesting is that Hanrin appears to be a fledgling. She is usually drawn appearing very young. That would make any "relationship" even more facinating. ^^;

Ohhhhh... interesting interesting. Nice work getting that Screenie.
Hmm i am leaning to the cross dressing idea now. The Fan pic makes the Emp of Han look Male not Female and she seems to be wearing mens cloths (hard to see when everyone wears a dress through

)

Hmmm a JK same sex relation ship.. does anyone know the chinese or japanese stance on same sex relationships? That would indicate the JK stance on same sex relationships. I do not think it is considered as taboo as it is in the west. Maybe not even enough to be considered weird.
I am really leaning on the fact that The emp of Han is a cross dresser but if that where true why would enki say THEY are rather odd? It implies both the Emp AND the Kirin have something fishy going on.
It could be the Kirin is the dominant partner in the relationship... though that sounds odd as in the photos Hanrin seems rather... submissive not like someone that could make an Emp back down. Besides can there BE a forcefull Kirin? I thought they by nature kowtowed to the emp all the time.

Hmmm, that certainly would be considered "odd".
I know!!!!

I've read the books and the reason why Enki thinks they are odd is because..... well lets just say the emperor and the kirin cares way too much about their looks. And the kirin is the one with the blonde hair. Oh and Han's emperor IS a male.

Believe it or not it's true!!!

I doubt that Hanrin is a fledgling as (if I remember correctly), their reign has so far been 200 years. Maybe it's like in Enki's case, where the kirin matured faster. A kirin stops aging in appearance once they've matured.

Ummm could you be more specific about careing to much about their looks? Are they very vain or spending all imperial funds on cloths?.
Are you SURE the emp is Male? The Screen shot Clearly saids Empress of Han.

Yeah, that's what I meant. ::laughs::
edit: Well, it would be funny if he/she is a crossdresser.

Very Sure

What I mean of "caring way too much of there looks" is that they just love being the trendiest of all the emperors and kirins. A piece of their wardrobe has to be the most colourful, bold, attractive and expensive clothing in all of the emperors and kirins... living or dead! If the translation of the latest book comes up you'll know what I mean.
P.S: Ask any JK fan in Japan if the emperor of Han is a male. They'll most likely to say yes. I know it's hard to believe, it shocked me too when I heard that!
Forgot sumthing!

Okay, I have since found a Chinese digital translation of 'Tasogare no Kishi, Akatsuki no Sora' (the continuation of the Taiki arc), and with my rather mediocre skills, managed to wade through it.
As Shushou said, the Han emperor is male and the kirin is female. And they are a nuisance where ever they go, apparently, because they are so picky and finicky! They're a hilarious duo ... and snarky enough to butt heads with Shouryuu and Rokuta!

I think that's that emperor of Ren you're referring to. Han's ruler would probably kill himself before ruining his manicure over menial labour.
