Sea God in the East, The Mighty Deep in the West Chapter 4
[Present]
At Atsuyu’s grave…
“Do you think Atsuyu should have been King?” Youko questioned Shoryu.
“I don’t know. I think he wanted to be a good leader and had no doubt about it. I mean he knew what he wanted.” Shoryu answered.
[Past]
In Kankyu, rain has started pouring. The water level is rising rapidly but villagers are not worried because a dyke had been built by the King. Little did they know that a battle will soon begin…
In the underground passage, Enki heard voices and had hidden behind some rocks.
“Have you found him yet?”
“No sir.”
“Alright, check upstairs again. You guys, come with me.”
“He must be lost. A kirin is dumb you know” Shoryu still under the disguise as a soldier suddenly spoke up.
Enki hearing the familiar voice took a peek at the soldiers.
“What do you mean?”
“A kirin is a mixed breed of animal between a horse(ba) and a deer(ka). So it is called Baka(idiot).
The soldiers all laughed.
“You are such a clown. Alright. Let’s get started”
Shoryu and the rest were moving away to find for Enki. Shoryu turned around a last time and saw Enki hiding behind the rocks.
“Taiboku, is this the brat… I mean child we’re looking for?” Shoryu moves towards Enki.
“What?”
“Is this a bad time for me to come out?” Enki whispered to Shoryu. Shoryu gives him an assuring smile and shakes his head.
“Taiho I’m glad you’re safe. I was so worried. Kei-haku and other officers are worried about you.” said the captain.
“I was looking for Koya and got lost.” Enki lied.
“Give Taiho a hand” the captain ordered Shoryu.
“Yes, sir.”
“My leg hurts. I can’t walk. Carry me” Enki said with a smile.
“Oh” Shoryu smiled and gave Enki a piggy back ride. “Don’t make me worried again” Shoryu whispered to Enki.
Koya ran to meet Enki. “How is he?”
“I wonder if he’s okay. He looks like he’s dying.” Shoryu answered.
“Take him to a room. He’s unwell.” Koya ordered.
Back at the Royal Palace in Kankyu, Itan and Shuko (the king’s aide) were at the balcony worrying about their King and Taiho’s safety.
“It’s really pouring down there. I should have gone to Ganboku as well. I don’t like waiting for results from afar. Should we let that fool handle this alone?” Itan voiced his concerns.
“I guess that’s all we could do now” Shuko replied.
Shoryu puts Enki on a bed in an underground cell while Rokuta the monster guards it from outside.
“Rokuta are you alright? Are you in pain?”
Enki opens his eyes, “I’m fine. You…” Enki cringed as though he was in pain.
“Rokuta!”
“You smell like blood. You killed a man? You never smelled like blood before.” Enki spoke weakly.
“It’s an emergency. If you try to hurt Kei-haku, I will kill you too…” Koya explained and turned to walk away.
“He ordered you to kill against your will?”
“What?”
“That’s what you told me the first time we met.” Enki said recalling the past…
[Flashback]
Enki had spotted a little boy riding on a monster late at night. He chased after them and questioned the boy about the monster.
“I tell him not to eat, but he doesn’t listen…” the little boy had said.
“But Atsuyu made you kill a man.” Enki continued.
“I don’t care about it anymore. That’s all in the past. I’m working for Atsuyu now. I take his orders. That’s what Kirins do too, right? Follow your King’s orders.”
“Shoryu doesn’t order me to kill a man!”
“You don’t know what people do. Your master is human too.”
Shoryu who had been standing aside all this while suddenly spoke, “No. I won’t. It’s much faster to do it on my own.”
“En-o?” Koya was surprised to see the King standing right there with him.
“Koya, I see you’re Rokuta’s real friend. Can I have him back? He’s a lot of trouble but I need him sometimes”
“You’ll lose the way without a Kirin?”.
“No. My officers will only attack me if he’s not with me.” Shoryu laughed.
“Why did you come to Gen? To kill Kei-haku?” Rokuta the monster growled understanding that his master’s master is in danger.
Enki grabbed Koya’s sleeve, “Don’t. I won’t let you touch Shoryu.”
“Are you taking his side now?”
“I work for him.”
“I work for Kei-haku.”
“I like you Koya. But as long as you smell like blood I can’t even come close to you.”
“I had no choice. I want to protect Atsuyu just like you want to protect Shoryu.”
“So it’s okay to kill anyone for that? It’s ok to kill if Atsuyu says so? It’s ok to start a rebellion? It’s ok to overthrow a kingdom? That would produce new kids like you, Koya.”
“Who cares about the others?” Koya pulls his sleeve away from Enki. “Why is it wrong for a man to die? What’s wrong with a kingdom falling? People die someday. Kingdoms fall someday. No matter how much you hate it. You can’t stop that. As long as Atsuyu is fine, I’m ok.” He turns around and looks at Shoryu. “Are you afraid of bad economy? Are you afraid of death? I could teach you an easy way out. Everything should be destroyed.”
“Will it be ok if Atsuyu dies?” Enki asked.
“If that’s what he wants.”
Shoryu stepped in. “Give me a break. You don’t care about your kingdom falling? You don’t care about dying? What is the use of a King then? You belong to this kingdom. Atsuyu is not the only one you care about” grabbing Koya’s shoulders. “You care about this kingdom. I’m a king because the people need me to run the kingdom. I don’t exist without my people. You don’t care about the kingdom falling? What am I doing here then?”
[Flashback]
Shoryu was engaged in a fierce battle on a ship in Hourai...
“I lost my country once. I should’ve died with my people but I didn’t because I was told others needed me to run another one.”
“I’m only here to give you a rich kingdom, Koya.”
“I’m not so gullible to believe that.” pushing Shoryu’s hands away and walks out of the cell.
“Koya!” Enki shouts after him.
“I didn’t hear anything. I don’t know anything.” Koya walks over to Rokuta and brings him away.
“Koya!”
At the village, the villagers witnessed the Gen soldiers cutting the dyke. They fight with the soldiers to protect the dyke. The king’s soldiers were notified about the fight and had set fourth to help the villagers.
Atsuyu and his officers were gathered in the castle. Enki enters the room…
“This castle smells like blood all over. I can’t rest here. Say, why are you locking up your father, Atsuyu?”
“Huh?”
“I thought Genkai got sick and retired but he was fine. Being locked up and being sick are two different stories right?”
“He’s really sick. If that person doesn’t look it, you must have met another person.”
“Who’s ‘that person’ in the palace?”
“That would be my father.”
“Did you put your father in chains?”
“I…”
Enki looks around at the officers and asks, “Did you guys know about this?” he turns back at Atsuyu, “You said you were doing the right thing. Are kidnapping and locking up a person right things?”
“It was Koya’s idea to invite Taiho not mine.”
Koya was speechless.
“Please forgive me. I was not aware of my father’s situation. Who would do such a thing? I will get my men to investigate right away.”
Suddenly, Hakutan barges into the room.
“Kei-haku! How dare you? You’re letting the your soldiers cut the dyke! Why are you doing this?”
“Back off Hakutan.” Atsuyu ordered.
“Who will the masses think is doing the right thing? The people are fighting the state soldiers!”
At the river, many villagers had been killed. The Royal Army finally arrives.
The captain of the Royal Army upon seeing the scene thought to himself, “Build a dyke over Rokusui to test Atsuyu? He’s not just a fool after all.”
Back at the castle...
“The people who heard the news started leaving the castle sir! Gen is finished. Guys run away. Go to the King’s soldiers, confess your sins and ask for forgiveness.” Hakutan pleads.
“Hakutan!” grabbing Hakutan, Atsuyu pushes him down. “You are the traitor! You called me a good Reiin and talked me into this! Now we’re in trouble and you’re running away? Didn’t you tell me you wanted a dyke? Shame on you traitor! You took advantage of my heart and turned me into a rebel. When things go bad, you blame me and take off? I shouldn’t let you take advantage of me. Take this traitor away, Koya!”
“Kei-haku…” Koya just stood there.
“Taiho I will escort you to Kankyu. I will speak with the King directly. Please tell his Highness who is responsible for this.”
With a look of disgust, Enki walks away saying, “I’m going back to Kankyu. I don’t need company. I will talk to the King about this.”
Atsuyu was furious. “Hakutan! You plotted this with the King and Taiho? You volunteered to be a messenger to Kankyu knowing that could be killed, yet you came back safe and sound. I understand it now. The King must have been jealous of my popularity.”
“”My master won’t do that”
“How do you know?”
“He’s not you! You’re nothing compared to Shoryu!”
A voice sounded from somewhere in the room, “Hahahaha. I like that.”
“It was not meant to be a compliment.” Enki said.
“Huh? Who are you?” Atsuyu looked surprised.
Shoryu moved towards Atsuyu. “Naotaka Komatsu” He draws his sword out quickly and points it towards Atsuyu’s throat catching him by surprise. “Some call me En-o, Shoryu.”
“What?”
“No one moves. You too, Koya. Rebelling against the King is akin to rebelling against Heaven. There’s no need for the people to pay the price. You and I can settle it One-on-One. If you kill me that would be Heaven’s will too.” Withdrawing his sword, Shoryu continued, “If any of you wish to die for Atsuyu, defend him.” Looking around at the silent officers, “No one? They have abandoned you Atsuyu. Someone give him a weapon at least.”
Atsuyu takes a sword from a soldier and prepares to fight. Hakutan rushes to kneel down between Shoryu and Atsuyu begging Shoryu.
“This is the end of the rebellion, my lord. Kei-haku is finished. If your Highness must continue, please show Kei-haku mercy.”
“I see. Open up the castle gates and break up the soldiers.” Shoryu orders Atsuyu.
Atsuyu puts down his sword and bows before Shoryu. “Yes, your Highness.”
“Just in case, arrest him. I will be merciful. Don’t let him kill himself.” Shoryu turns to walk out.
Disappointed with the outcome, Atsuyu yelled “Shoryu!” lunging forward with the sword in his hands at Shoryu.
“Rikaku!” Enki calls for his Shirei at the same time Koya shouts “Rokuta!”
Enki’s shirei surfaces from the floor and attacks Atsuyu just before Atsuyu could hurt Shoryu. Atsuyu is bleeding profusely from the neck. Shoryu walks over to the seriously injured Atsuyu and raises his sword.
“Your pain is over.” He then stabs Atsuyu.
Koya, Rokuta the monster, Shoryu and Enki were now on the balcony of the castle.
“I didn’t try to save you…but I stopped Rokuta. I didn’t stop him! You made me!” Koya told Shoryu.
“What did I tell you, Koya? I’m here to give you a rich Kingdom.”
“Give it to someone else. Many people want that.”
“I’m very greedy. I’d pick a million and one over a million people.”
Koya turns to Rokuta and says, “This guy and I have no place to go. I’m a monster child.” He then hugs Rokuta and cry. “He won’t attack people against my will. He listens to me. He’s become patient for me.”
“I will give you and the monster a place to live.”
“What kind of prison is that? Does it come with a silver cage?”
Shoryu moves nearer and pats Rokuta’s head. “It’s a kingdom where no monsters will ever attack you. Give me some time Koya. No one will ever chase you again.”
“I wonder if that’ll ever happen”
“That’s what I’m here for, Koya.”
A tear rolls down Koya’s cheek. “I’ll be waiting for En to be such a great kingdom in Ko-kai… I’ll be waiting.” Koya gets on Rokuta and rides into the night taking one last look at Shoryu and Enki. “I’ll be waiting…”
“Thanks” Enki spoke up.
“For what?”
“For letting Koya go.”
“I didn’t do it for you.”
“Are you angry with me? I don’t blame you.”
“I told you I’ll take care of this.”
“Right”
“Shuko, Itan, you and others…”
“Shoryu…”
“What?”
“You promised a place to Koya. Can you give me one too?”
“You’re an En Kingdom’s citizen too. What kind of place do you want?”
“Green mountains and fields. A rich kingdom where no one has to starve. No one freezes nor gets wet in the evening. A time of peace. No one worries about starving or being in war. I want a peaceful land. I’ve always wanted that. (Enki imagines himself as a Kirin running freely on a vast green field surrounded by beautiful mountains under the great blue sky.) Where parents don’t have to abandon their children to survive. A rich kingdom.“
“You kept your promise and gave me a kingdom. I promise you that I will give you a rich, peaceful and green kingdom in return.”
“Good. I’ll keep my eyes closed until you tell me it’s ready.”
