I know someone who can type in japanese, I'll ask them to see. I know I asked this before, but does anyone know if Yamada sensei is going to come out with all his art for Juuni Kokki?

but sumtyms, translations makes no sense at all....like in the official jap site of 12k, they have translated kirin into giraffe...the sentences doesn't make sense at all....but it will help you on where to click...somehow it will....

The translations are literal. If you want to experiment take a Japanese phrase and translate it into Chinese. They borrow some of the same characters, and sometimes they mean different things. Sometimes you can get the actual meaning of a work from Chinese translation instead of Japanese.

The hard part is the grammer, and the fact that the phrases seem to translate into a puzzle of some kind. It really makes you appreciate how hard Eugene and Otyaku.com work to get us their great translations.


The following site will literally pronounce a Japanese word, but not necessarily give you a good meaning. It is also interesting to play with.

yes...it is better that they have retained the original jap words...that's how ono-sensei will prefer it....
it is also dubbed in our language, and they have retained the jap words...i just dunno if they dubbed it good, but i enjoy it alot...
it will have more sense of an epic if you retain the words that made it a different world...

Yes, although I'm not one for dubbing, the Twelve Kingdom's dub was not that bad. Actually, the whole industry has been getting better. I am happy that they kept the words the same.

Asian language can translate to other Asian languages much easier. when translated into English, it becomes a bit different (if it is direct translation). When people watch anime for the first time, they often want direct translation, but that doesn't work to well. Sometimes, people just have to accept that it is sometimes a part of the culture that certain things doesn't translate into their culture. What is it called again? Cultural relativism and culture shock. Heh, anthropology is fun.

it is true that it is easier to translate asian to asian...especially with our langguage...but it is hard to translate in english....in terms of word by word...but actually, when it comes to translations, it doesn't matter if you will translate it word by word...what's the most important is that the very sense of the original statement is retained.... =)

That's true. Although, when we look at the manga translations, the companies try to "modernize" the languages by making it "american." Where certain phrases becomes less formal and incorporating western slang that does not work at all when in comes to explaining anything. >.<

yah....sumtyms tokyopop does that...well, i hope the translator of JK will retain translte it very good...i mean, i wanna feel the writing skills of ono-sensei not only on the story but also on how she writes the scene and how she makes you feel on her every scenes... i know japanese writes deeply...and i wanna feel that depth when i read the english...

Psh, not just tokyopop. viz and adv does that as well. So far, Del Rey has been one of the better translator. Thank goodness they translated GhostHunt. Woohoo for Ono-sensei.

weeeh...everytime it gets better....kudos to ono-sensei! i can't wait for the english now....

In the meantime, you could get Ghost Hunt, the manga. Just reading it makes me love Ono-sensei even more for her ability to create great stories. Shiho Inada is a great mangaka too, her art is really cute and Ono-sensei said Inada-sensei drew the characters exactly how she envisioned them.

Now if only there's a Juuni Kokki manga.

nah...i don't think JK needs a manga...it already topped the sales by just being a book...

I would love it to be a manga. Granted, I already have the screenshot books. The manga's would be just as wonderful...maybe even more like the novel without the extra characters (although I loved them). Juuni Kokki is just soooo wonderful. They really should have more merchandise...mangas...anything to feed my obsession.

oic....well yeah, i wouls also love to have merchandise on JK...that would be luvleh...

They did have merchandise, but it's pretty much sold out by the time the anime came to the US. Plus, the only online site I found that sold them doesn't ship internationally. I cried. Oh well, I was hoping that if it is popular enough, more merchandise will be made...like the T-shirts. ^_^

T-shirt wise, they only have three designs. I'm wondering if it's possible to get the quotes to print on the t-shirts. Heh, that would be kwel. A t-shirt with your favorite Juuni Kokki quote.

Well, there's "Twelve Kingdoms - Anime Edition", a series of 15 books classified as comics on Amazon, which presumably means it's a manga based off the anime version of the storyline (though I haven't seen it, so I'm not certain). Go to http://www.amazon.co.jp, select the 本 tab along the top, and then search for 十二国記―アニメ版.

There's also an official anime guide (十二国記公式アニメガイド), and a five volume set called 十二国記アニメ脚本集 (Twelve Kingdoms Anime Scenario Collection), which I think is the screenshot art books.

Is anyone familiar with any of these?

This I am not sure. I thought they were the same as the 15 volume set. This is a compliation of the anime screencaps/arts, but with interviews (I think). Maybe alternate storyline? I really don't know. I think it is the animation scripts??
