I like youko.because she is cool, brave and noble character.
Re: Fav Char
Oh The mighty mouse Rakshun to be sure. Why? He is wise never loses his temper, has a wonderfull habit of calming people down and is all around good and supportive.
If your spirit has wings to travel, even across the breadth of a thousand million nights, imagination will guide the way and the gateway will always be open to you.
QUACK QUACK!!!

Aozaru.
Easily. It's very sad that they didn't find more space to write him in.
In fact, I can't believe I forgot and wrote Chuutatsu earlier (although he's cool too).

Well, I can't vote against Rakushun, but I think after this arc, I have to vote for Youko.
Also, Hankyo gets my cool youma vote. Taiki's toutetsu is awesome, but Hankyo just looks cool all the time.

I like Rokuta and Youko about tied.
Rokuta seems a little bitchier than the average kirin--wonder how he and and the Queen of Kyou would get along, heh--and his past interests me. I guess I just found it very intriguing that there was an "anti-Emperor", at least for a while, kirin out there. (As opposed to Taiki, who seemed to feel unworthy of choosing an emperor.) Also, I have to adore a kirin that has no problem bapping their Emperor over the head when the time calls for it.
In a more personal way, he reminds me of the most stubborn parts of myself.
As for Youko, I've liked her since the very beginning. I personally know what it feels like to live your life for others, always wanting to make people happy at the expense of yourself. Therefore she was a character that spoke deeply to me. I know there were some out there that found her annoying at the start of the series, but I always was able to understand and really like her. Watching her grow up into a wonderful, independent woman made me feel good, and is probably one of the main reasons I think 12 Kokuki is my all time favorite anime.
I also like Taiki, but not quite as much as those two. His cuteness and sad story endeared him to me, but I didn't relate to him quite as much as the other two. (That whole worrying excessively over the right thing to do is something I've faced in the past, though)
I also love Shouryuu; he makes me laugh, and seems like a pretty nice guy for the most part. I think out of all the rulers in the twelve kingdoms I've seen so far, he's the one I would like to serve the most, if I had a choice. Can't help but love an emperor that nicknames his kirin "Baka". So I guess he and Taiki are tied for second faves.
Everyone loves Rakushun, and I can't blame them. The little guy is so cuddly! Who wouldn't want a Rakushun of their own to hug and have make everything in your life better?

Rakushun - KAWAII!!! And not only that, he has brains as well!
and
Enki - DA BOY! (a more than 500-year-old boy, but oh well) He seems so free in his decisions, and with this "Big-Brother-Little-Brother"-Thing he has going with En-Ou, you can forget at times that he is a kirin and bound to obey the orders of his emperor.

Speaking of Enki, did anyone else find the comment that En-ou made to Youko after he and his kirin came to visit her after odd? IIRC, he said that if there weren't problems for him to deal with, "I would probably destroy En". Then Enki just glared at him for a while. What was that about? Was he teasing Enki, or is he a more belligerent person than he comes off as being when we first meet him?
I love many of the characters of this series, but my favorite would be... *drumroll* Rokuta! If I were an empress would definitely love to have a kirin like him, he may be childish and somewhat rude sometimes, but deep down he's very wise and worries about other people. Plus, he seems to be the only kirin who actually has a sense of humor (as opposed to Keiki). Enki's definitely the coolest kirin ever! ^_^
My second faves would be:
1) The Empress of Kyou. She seems to be a spoiled brat at first, but she's really wise and very smart. In one of the chapters (in the Taiki arc) one of the sages mentions that Kyouki stayed at Mount Hou 28 years before finding an emperor. Reading between the lines, I'd say that by the time the Empress ascended the throne, Kyou must have been a complete wasteland. Despite that, she has managed to create a prosperous country, even though she must have been very young (about 13, I guess) when she became empress. Also, even though she's treats Kyouki like a small child and even spanks him, she also seems to love him very much. The girl's cool! ^_^
2) Taiki! He's just adorable! I wish I could hug him! (I'd like to point out that I am NOT a pedophile!!)
3) Youko. Wise, smart, has lots of guts, a bit too serious, maybe, but she's still a strong character.
4) Rakushun!!! The mouse ROCKS! Who wouldn't like to have a friend like him? Plus, he's cute in both his human and his mouse forms. ^_^

I don't mean to object just to be contrary, but even in episode 40, I still think she's spoiled. -_-* Say what you will about reading into her motives, and how secretly she's being fair and just, but I just saw her throwing a tantrum.Veronica wrote:1) The Empress of Kyou. Well, it all depends on the circumstances, of course. Take Shoukei's 30 years and Suzu's century, for example. Neither really had any chance to grow due to the conditions in which they lived. Neither had any encouragement to become more than they were and never found any inclination to on their own. Their lives were really quite monotonous, with no variety in experiences. With so little change in their lives, growth became unlikely.Zonis wrote:I think that one thing people keep forgetting is that even if the body does not grow over time, the mind will always...
no no no, what I mean is, in Animes, such as this one, and shows/movies in general, if someone is trapped in a childs or a young body, one always forgets that while their body may not age, they do mentaly grow into adults.
There is only 1 instance I can think of off the top of my head, and thats a Bebop episode. The episode with that kid who got exposed to that explosion, never aged, yet grew into an adult mentaly and used his appearance to his advantage.

Since I read Günther Grass - "Die Blechtrommel"
(No clue what the international name of this book is, as amazon.com doesn't list it; I am sure though that it was translated, as it is a classic),
I wouldn't make that mistake...it's about a boy who refuses to become an adult and therefore simply doesn't grow anymore, but who, in the end, thinks more adult than most adults surrounding him and despises what he sees. It's a difficult read, and definitely worth it.
And no, my comment wasn't aimed at the "cute boy" Rokuta/Enki, but at the fact that he, unlike any of the other kirin (Kyouki, Keiki and Kourin come to mind - and the kirin that helped retrieve Taiki - was that Saiki? I forget...), seems to not be completely...well, engulfed in being a kirin, but still has a life. He seems to be the only kirin who frequently wanders off on his own, always speaking En-Ou doesn't need him. And when he's in the palace, the two together seem to form a completely different bond than the other emperors and their kirins.
In Yoko's case, Keiki is an advisor and Yoko sometimes still seems to find it difficult to agree with him on things, especially since Keiki at times seems a little unflexible.
Kourin was positively bossed around by Kou-Ou. And Kyou-Ou slaps her kirin if she feels he has said something stupid...Is it only me, or do En-Ou and Enki possibly have the best relationship to keep a kingdom stable by working together (after all, En IS prospering for 500 years now...)

I wonder if this is because both were kaikyaku. Enki did go back to Tokoyo early enough to be well-versed in their customs, but he was also rather young. En-ou is such an easygoing, unusual guy compared to emperors born naturally in Tokoyo that he and Enki seem to have rubbed off on each other. They reinforce each others' irresponsibility.Shilahr wrote:And when he's in the palace, the two together seem to form a completely different bond than the other emperors and their kirins.
Keiki has never dealt with kaikyaku, and neither have most of the emperors, so they all seem to fall into the same ways of thinking that are encouraged in their world. Keiki believes he has to be formal to maintain his dignity as a kirin. Some emperors see their kirin merely as servants, and most kirin we've seen so far don't have much backbone or cunning to start with. If their masters fail, they just give up with a, "Think of the people..." Keiki at least disagrees strongly with Youko (often).
But Enki and En-ou bonded pretty quickly, so their relationship is different.
You will have your answer very soon, it has probably something to do with what Shouryuu told to Yoko about the grave in episode 40...jmc wrote:Speaking of Enki, did anyone else find the comment that En-ou made to Youko after he and his kirin came to visit her after odd? Favorite: Rakushun
he's got the same name as me. of course he's my favorite.
other favorites: Kantai, En-ou, Enki
Kantai, what can you say. he's a big bear. gotta love the half-beasts.
En-ou and Enki, I like the way they're paired up. individually, they're really good characters. Together as an Emperor-Kirin pair, they're even better.
