recomendation for anime similar to 12k

There's also Record of Lodoss War.
I've been watching Mahou Shoujo Tai Alice, and I'm finding it quite interesting. Only halfway through the 40 episodes (which are only 8 minutes each), but it has a girl getting transported to a world of witches and warlocks. The historical aspects of this world is just underneath the surface, but hasn't been revealed too much (any of it seems to be revealed through flashbacks). It's a series made for a young female audience, but it's surprisingly progressive and rather experimental in how it's animated and directed. The animation style is quite different from the mainstream animes (so that a few people are saying it's *not* anime... which is silly), but it is still very good looking. The plotline moves quickly, so you have to pay attention. I'll update when I watch the second half of the series.
It's not like 12K in many aspects, but I'm finding it very good so far. I have the same problem as thesmokingman; I can't find any anime really comparable to JK.

Just to answer: no, you won't find it on Amazon.com or anywhere else in the U.S., yet. It hasn't been picked up for licensing and distribution in North America, despite being more than a year old and having a sequel planned this year in Japan. Someone with some, ahem, computer experience and torrent knowledge may be able to help you... acquire it...ninhsavestheday wrote:sounds good. is there another title? i can't find it on amazon.
In any case, I will be buying this when it comes out here (assuming it is uncut and has unedited Japanese with English-translation subtitles, though I do hope for an excellent English dub).
The other titles for Mahou Shoujo Tai Alice seem to be Mahou Shoujo Tai Arisu and Tweeny Witches. If you're curious, "Mahou Shoujo Tai" translates into "Magical Girl Squad".

i'm going to recommend something super old
it's not a anime but manga .
RG Veda by clamp
it's a world rule by one supreme god [tyrant atm , hint of previous war dethroning the previous good emperor god] and tribes of minor gods. very immersive world and epic story. instead of 12 kingdoms we get glimpses of different tribes of gods and their rulers. manga started with a survivor of a tribe which was anilated by the tyrants . he was prophecy to end the tyrant's rule and through his ordeal , we get introduced to that world.
i saw the english version by tokyopop recently. ppls who like 12k might give it a try.

Basilisk! It's one of the best!
Studio : GONZO Digimation
Also involved: Kodansha
Licenced by : FUNimation
Length : 24 Episodes
Year : 2005
Genre : Fantasy - Drama - Romance - Action - Mature
cite one of the reviews here:
"you can't really stop watching this anime once you've started, it will just bring you all the way until the last episode.
the story is engaging and definitely exciting, the fighting is great though you have to be prepared for lots of bloody and extremely violent scenes, not to mention some nudity here and there.
Basilisk is a very fast paced anime that each episode really matters.
you won't get bored with so many different characters in it and many times I found myself rooting and sympathizing some of them. it's not all about fighting and killing, lots of emotions are involved as well.
in addition, the graphics and music are great!"

12 k is the best!!!!
i'd recommend rurouni kenshin and inuyasha. inuyasha is a bit like 12 k when it comes to a girl transported into an ancient world.
basilisk is good fighting but slightly depressing. (do NOT watch it if you are depressed)
actually im trying to find a good anime to watch at the mo too. i think i might start on fushigi yugi. if anyones seen it, tell me if its good.
my friend (shes standing right next to me) recommends bleach

Kiba is nice, it's 50+ episodes of epic fantasy. It's about a boy named Zed who thinks life is boring and wants to find a way into another world.
I heartily second this recommendation. Moribito is a great novel series, and the anime is a loving adaptation with gorgeous art and really great acting.thesmokingman wrote:I just started watching Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. I like it a lot so far. It's about a young prince who is condemned to death and his mother sends him away with a bodyguard to protect him, hoping to be reunited at some point in the future.
It reminds me a bit of the Taiki arc in 12 Kingdoms, except in reverse. Rather than an ordinary person going to live in a Kingdom, it's a young prince who has to leave his Kingdom and live as an ordinary person.

You can try to read the novel translations, if you have not already. They will keep you busy for a while.
I have not found any program with a similar format that is not as good as Juuni Kokki. Fushigi Yugi have any similarties mythology but is mostly fluff shoujo, the lack of depth that makes JK so good.
Other shows that have built large imaginary worlds include Haibane Renmei, Escaflowne, now and then, here and there, Kino's journey, Crest of the Stars, and dismissed the princess. But none of these programs actually have this historical aspect of the mythology for them.
You know, the more I think, there is no real entertainment that can be compared to JK. There are shows with some of the same elements that make JK as well, but after receiving the complete application from Juuni Kokki, the show always seems to lack something in comparison.

I'd also like to recommend Infinite Ryvius.
It's really not very similar to 12k on the surface. It's science fiction rather than fantasy. But, in terms of world development, it's really amazingly done. The show is a drama, and while 12k isn't QUITE so dramatic I feel that can be a similar pull. It's really the best character study type anime I've ever seen.

I would recommend Saiunkoku Monogatari; the world is well developed, the characters are all wonderful and the main heroine is canny but sweet and there's a whole plethora of appealing side characters that don't get neglected either. It does come off a bit more shoujo I have to warn you but its well worth a watch (or two or three). There was a nice job done on the artwork as well.
