Nyokai

Post by DarkSongstress »

Okay as of this moment I've only watched the anime and read Demon Child, Shadow of the Moon, Sea of Shadows, and Sea of the Wind, Shore of the Maze so if the question I'm about to ask is answered in later novels, then I just haven't gotten to it yet.

Now I understand nyokai are born to be like surrogate mothers and the first bodyguard that the kirin has. But what happens to them after a kirin dies? The question occurred to me after rewatching the anime and seeing Kourin nyokai come and get her after she dies. Does the nyokai continue to live and wait for the birth of the new kirin of the kingdom they once served? Or do they die along with their kirin?

I think I may have stumbled upon the answer to my question on one of the JK information sites. According to Ranka, the nyokai protecting the ranka of Kou's kirin is not the same as the previous one. So it would seem that the nyokai serves only the Kirin that they are born before, but I still prefer to have one of the novels confirm that.

I only say one thing: WHY CAN'T I SEE SANSHI'S NIPPLES?

Well, the very beginning of the Taiki novel shows Haku Sanshi hatching, a bit before Taiki was supposed to hatch.

I don't remember anything clearly stating what happens to the nyokai after the kirin's death, but new nyokai for a new kirin seems established. (Nor do we know what happens to the shirei after they've eaten the corpse; the whole taming process is supposed to have cleansed them of taint, so what do these redeemed youma do next?)

We know they *eat* the kirin after the kirin's death. Seems odd to then die after that. Can you provide a reference?

I agree with mindstalk. I mean, what kind of deal would that be? They eat the corpse of the kirin and then they die? Sounds like a pretty crappy pact to me.

Because Kourin's nyoukai seemed to be the one to take her wherever after her death, it leaves questions. However, since nyoukai are born specifically for the purpose of caring for the kirin and there doesn't seem to be a pact made between the two, I doubt that they actually take part in the consumption of the corpse. It's my opinion that they probably do die in a short time, as an emperor would.
