Forgotten Pasword System not too useful

I have a login. I've read and I think I've even posted here before. but I don't remember the username and password I used. So I clicked the Forgot Password link and it then asked me not only for my email (which is usually all you're asked for) but also for my username. I don't know what username I used so I couldn't get it so tell me my password. so I tried to create a new account but it wouldn't let me use my normal email address because it was already registered to a user. this is a badly designed system. If i didn't have another email address to sign up with, I couldn't even get to a contact email address to let anyone at the site know that i couldn't log in.

this obviously wasn't a big problem but IMO this should be rememdied, when signing in you should have the option to sign in with username OR email address.
