Anyone here play any massively multiplayer online games? Which ones have you tried, and what have you stuck with?
The very first MMO game I played was Everquest. The daddy of today's current crop of online games. I remember being excited at the prospect of being able to log into a world populated by real people and not just NPC's. Unfortunately, as it turned out, most people in online games are tards and didn't help the experience much. Still, I had fun running around with the few friendly players I met ingame. Sadly, my subscription was cut off just four months after the game's release, as my father noted a drastic decline in my academic performance and cut me off. My friends would continue to play this game for a year or more afterward, but I didn't touch another online game until several years down the road.
I'm sure most of you have heard of Ragnarok Online by now. I wasted so many hours into that game during the beta phase a few years ago. Mmm, nothing like mindlessly running around hunting down cute animated sprites before other people got to them. Still, it was a fun and cute diversion while it lasted. I got up to a level 35 magician or something like that before he game became pay to play. I managed to discover a private server and played there for a bit. The experience rates were increased, so I managed to play up to level 70 or so, but then I got bored of it and quit the game again.
Currently, I'm playing Guild Wars. Like any other new MMO, it's got its share of bugs and issues, but overall, it's a very solid game. The graphics are beautiful, especially at the highest settings, but the system reqs are very friendly. Unlike most other MMO's, the game has a definite storyline that has a beginning and an ending. Another notable difference from other standard MMO's is the instancing of every explorable area outside of town; you and your party have your own version of the map, so you don't run into other players outside. The game definitely has less of the MMO feel to it, and I enjoy it very much.
One last game that I would have liked to play was a community based MMORPG from Funcom called Midgard. It was canned in late 2002 much to my disappointment, though there remains a small glimmer of hope that it could be resurrected. It was supposed to be set in the history and mythology of the ancient Norse. Players would be part of a community that needed to work together to survive and expand their village. Since the game was never finished, I have no idea how it would have worked out, but it definitely sounds like something I would have like to give a try.
That's it for the MMO's I've played or wanted to play. Anyone else?
