Ep 39 - some thoughts. (spoilers)

Discuss about anything related to the Twelve Kingdoms, also known as 十二国記, Juuni Kokki or Jūni Kokuki. Talk about the novels, the anime, the writer Fuyumi Ono or illustrator Akihiro Yamada, but beware for spoilers!

Ep 39 - some thoughts. (spoilers)

Post by shouki »

In reverse order...

Note that at the end, the graves are now surrounded by a carpet of flowers. If you look at the earlier episodes, the ground is very barren and dusty. The obvious conclusion is that this is Tentei strongly approving of Youko's rule (now).

For the audiance with the minsters/officials, Youko's certainly not afraid to reward generously - making Koukan top minister, making Kantai top general (kinda appropriate since he's a one-man army). Those two lackys of Seikyou sure are dumb - the person they were sucking up to has been arrested, his opponents given massive promotion and they protest it! They should be distancing themselves as much as possible... or resigning to save themselves from punishment. Youko sure can be commanding when she wants to be.

Hmm, I wonder how old Enho actually is. He certainly approved of Youko's response to needing a scabbard for the sword - ie looks like Youko's better (at some things at least) than the last Meikun Kei had.

I wonder what's going to happen to Kei-Kei. Looks like he'll be able to grow up in the palace. Maybe Youko will adopt him...?

Nice that the plots earlier in the story arc (like Kaki and Uikyou) are cleared up, for the most part. It's really annoying how many series leave major plot points unanswered (often for no good reason it seems).

Youko invites Shoukei and Suzu to come help her in the palace. I wonder if she'll promte them directely to ministerial level or something, or they'll have to work their way up properly... Having the right heart, but not having enough knowledge would be a problem.

Asano doesn't survive the series. Given ep 37-38, this shouldn't be too surprising. I'm not that surprised that happened either - he seemed too far gone to be saveable.

The first 1-2 scenes are very cool. Enough said 8)

Perhaps Shoukei and Suzu might become ambassadors to their native lands.

As for Asano, I kinda wanted him to survive because he really didn't belong in that world, he just got sucked in and caught up in things. I would have liked to see him sent back to Japan, even after what he did.

Asano's situation was a little weird, the way they whisked him away like they might be able to save him somehow. If I hadn't already seen his headstone ten episodes ago, I wouldn't have know whether he would live or die. :? I guess Youko will have to break the news to Sugimoto, if she ever sees her again.

Interesting that she puts Kantai in sole charge of the army, rather than appointing the multiple generals that existed before. She obviously trusts him, but the multiple divisions can also be a security measure. The other two divisions balked faster than the center division general when they saw Keiki show up.

The only thing I dislike about this episode is that it seems to remove most of our chances to go back to Kei for quite a while. There's the En side plot and the whole unresolved Tai/Taiki mess, and plenty of other kingdoms besides that we haven't seen yet. Unless they all decide to declare war on Kei, I have a feeling that we'll be relegated to seeing Youko and Rakushun pass love notes during class.

Along the lines of that point, I still don't get why the Minister of Treasury (or whichever minister) was arrested for lying to the empress earlier in this arc commited suicide in jail. Couldn't he had at least explicitly try to tell Yoko the truth?

Garamir, you will see again everybody from this arc as well as rulers/taiho from other countries when/if they animate the second part of Taiki's story :)
So don't give up ;)

Won't be surprised if those two didn't survive the cleaning up Youko will be implementing throughout the ministries. The female minister (never caught her name if they identified her) was placing far more emphasis on tradition and thinking what she thought was right. Obviously, Seikyou and company forgot who their big boss was - the emperor. Then again, with the weak rulers before Youko, I can't blame them for being ambitious.

Asano was insane for most of the arc - he shot a child! At least he was at peace with himself.

Tentei wrote:Remember when he said he was okay with selling touki? Well most likely it was to supply the rebels. He couldn't explicitly say anything because at that point, Youko trusted Seikyou the most. Seikyou would have said that Kaki is just a traitor like the Lord of Baku Province. The "suicide" was merely Seikyou murderering him so he can't talk anymore. Sort of like why he killed Uikyou.
still >_< someone who suppports Koukan in the palace should had at least raise their voice and hit Youko with some sort of curiousity and get her moving to enquire about it. well, eventually she did anyways, though it was after the events of Taishi's death and the disappearance of Koukan...

One thing about Seikyou... he seemed to be giving such great advices to Youko very early in the arc :( telling her to be weary of Gahou and all.

and yeah, I'm just starting to rewatch this arc :D

Um... Can someone explain why everyone was laughing when Koushou asked Youko to get Sekki into a primary school in Ei? I assumed it was because Sekki was really the brains behind the rebellion and he was beyond that level.... (?)

I guess he didn't quite realize that Youko was the Empress, he was the only one who didn't kneel before her and didn't quite seem to understand why the others knelt down. He also said something like "You must be someone important." to Youko when asking if she could get Sekki into a school. So basically, I think the others laughed because he apparently still didn't grasp the fact that his former comrade in arms (Youko) was the Empress.

perhaps its simply springtime ? Remember, the farmers stayed at the rike and enho said they live on their fields in summer. Also in Hou there was
lots of snow... I think Tentei has a very indirect and slow influence, and does not throw wonders all the time like some D&D gods 8)

I think they will be more friends and advisors, somewhat like Rakshun...
Could be very interesting if a new Hourin/ki chooses a certain girl

I really love this series, and at 36 i feared they would rush the *end*, but in fact i never saw such a good one ! I had a very stupid smile on my face for the whole time i watched ep 39 ! Thanx so much for translating it ! I will learn Japanese now and try to translate it to german :D

Such as? It was mentioned earlier that the children of an emperor/empress aren't allowed to be chosen. Sonshou is ineligible.

It would have been interesting, her now perhaps beeing a good ruler but her father being hated :) . But right, at ep 32 at 17.40 "Someone who bears the same surname of a ruler cannot be selected to rule next"...

What a pity... (i translated surname to nickname instead of family name, my bad)

When I think back on it, remember how Enho was very very worried about and seemed to prioritize saving Keikei in both times he was in harms way. Could this mean that KeiKei will play a signifigant role/may be someone really important?

Probably not. He just worries about the kids more than himself. After all, he's immortal (at least, I think he is), and he's already lived a long time.

Enho earned his immortality with his wisdom and deed long ago. That's why his physical appearance is that of an old man. He acomplished some of his greatest deed while a mortal.
